Angela Williams is a dedicated psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with over 15 years of experience in psychiatric nursing and three years as a nurse practitioner. Angela began her journey in psychiatric nursing in 2007 in Wilmington, where she worked in the community supporting individuals with chronic mental illness. How is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Different from a Psychiatrist?
Psychiatrists are medical doctors (MD or DO) who complete medical school and residency training in psychiatry. Psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) are advanced practice nurses with master’s or doctoral-level training specifically in mental health.
In North Carolina, PMHNPs are fully licensed to diagnose conditions, develop treatment plans, and prescribe psychiatric medications under a collaborative agreement with a physician. For patients, this means access to high-quality psychiatric care delivered through a nursing-based, patient-centered lens.
